Cricket Powder Food Bar Supplier Grows Exports with Help of Branded Program

by Food Export | Jul 26, 2017
In 2013 Brown University students Gabi Lewis and Greg Sewitz ordered 2,000 live crickets to their campus apartment in the quest to create a healthy, delicious, and socially-responsible protein bar. They quickly discovered a recipe for a protein bar made with cricket flour that packed a lot of protein into few calories and Exo, Inc. was born.

Both Greg and Gabi graduated in May of 2013 and made the decisions move to New York City and to postpone graduate school and other job offers in order to follow their passions and grow Exo, Inc. They have been committed to growing awareness of insect food sources and developing a wide variety of cricket-based protein bars that cater to different tastes and even Paleo and gluten-free diets.

The Brooklyn-based supplier utilized Food Export’s Branded program in 2016 to export to Canada where they saw sales of over $5,500 and project an additional $10,000 in future sales. The company utilized the Market Access Program funding to deepen their relationships with Canadian distribution partners through promotional activities and to help drive sales in this market.Exo

Greg Sewitz, Co-Founder of Exo, Inc. said, “We're happy with our participation in the Food Export program. We feel supported and feel that the staff are very helpful. As a small private company, this help and support is very important to our growth and success”.

Exo, Inc.’s nutrient-dense real food bars were designed by a three-Michelin-starred chef. They combine minimally-processed cricket flour protein with ultra-premium ingredients for an original and savory line. Their original line of bars consists of five flavors - Blueberry Vanilla, Cocoa Nut, Apple Cinnamon, PB&J and Banana Bread while their Savory Line of bars consists of three flavors - BBQ, Mediterranean and Mango Curry.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
