Increasing Export Sales from Michigan to Hong Kong

In July of 2015, Trueline Foods of Grand Rapids, Michigan, attended the Focused Trade Mission to Hong Kong for Retail and Food Service Products. The mission was organized by Food Export – Midwest and coordinated by Jamie Zmitko-Somers, International Marketing Program Manager at the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Focused Trade Missions are designed to immerse U.S. suppliers into export markets by taking them to markets that show potential for their products to thrive. The services offered at the Focused Trade Mission to Hong Kong included one-on-one meetings with buyers, a chef demo and product showcase, and retail and food service facility tours. During the event, Trueline Foods made one new agent relationship which resulted in $5,000 in sales of cooking oil products since the mission.

Trueline Foods is also a participant in other Food Export – Midwest programs.  The company uses Food Export's Branded Program for 50% reimbursement on international marketing expenses.  This allowed them to receive 50% reimbursement on travel expenses to the missions in Hong Kong, making it easier to attend.  Trueline Foods also plans to exhibit at the Natural & Organic Products Expo in Hong Kong in August of 2016 to further develop the relationship with the buyer in Hong Kong as well as meet with additional buyers from the region.  They will use Branded Program for 50% reimbursement on booth fees and travel expenses to the show.

Furthermore, Nancy Tuohy, Vice President of Trueline Foods, also utilizes Food Export – Midwest’s Export Advisor Program for further assistance on her export endeavors.  Through the program, Nancy works one-on-one with Food Export's Export Advisor Gary Winget for assistance with market research.  According to Tuohy, “Gary has provided me with very effective market research reports which helped me to identify top markets for my products.  He helped me understand which are markets currently importing edible cooking oils from the United States and which project to be growth markets in the years to come.”
