Island Creek Oysters Positioning for European Sales Re-launch When Embargo Ceases

by Food Export | Dec 14, 2017
Island Creek Oysters, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is a leading producer of farmed oysters. The company sells over 200,000 oysters a week. From the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast, as far north as Canada, and as far south as the Caribbean, Island Creek Oysters can be found on menus. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, they will also be appearing on European menus once again.

Island Creek Oysters was successfully building a market in France until a trade embargo for molluscan shellfish many years ago halted trade between the EU and USA. It’s hoped the ban will be ended sometime in 2018. If so, Massachusetts will likely be one of two states initially allowed to sell oysters to Europe. In anticipation, Island Creek Oysters requested customized market research through the Market Builder service to obtain information about current French market conditions.  According to company President Chris Sherman, “The market knowledge gained by working with Food Export-Northeast’s French in-market representative was super helpful.”

In March 2017, Food Export-Northeast also introduced Island Creek Oysters to Celine Astruc, Chief Editor of PdM, national seafood trade magazine for France. Buyers from across Europe read the magazine, and her interview with Island Creek resulted in extensive feature coverage of the company in their April issue. Recreating awareness of their business and re-establishing their market presence will take time when trade opportunities reopen – but the extensive press coverage should help to boost company efforts.

Meanwhile, Island Creek Oysters is also taking advantage of Food Export-Northeast programs and services to expand their reach into international markets. In 2017, they participated in the Online Products Catalog and the Seafood Buyers Mission. These activities provide introductions to their company and products to buyers worldwide.

Food Export USA-Northeast is a private, non-profit association of Northeastern state agricultural promotion agencies that use federal, state, and industry resources to promote the export of Northeastern food, fishery and agricultural products. Food Export-Northeast administers many services through Market Access Program (MAP) funding from the USDA, Foreign Agricultural Service.
