Family-Owned Herr Foods Builds on 78 Years of Success with New International Growth

“We had lost touch with this buyer over the years. Because of Food Export’s Buyers Mission, we met face to face with the buyer, and it gave us a chance to look at new opportunities and rejuvenate our connection with this buyer, resulting in new sales and, more importantly, a long-term relationship.”

Founded in 1946, Herr Foods Inc. has grown into a leader in the snack food industry, producing more than 340 snack items for the retail market. Family-owned and operated for over 78 years, the Nottingham, Pennsylvania–based company has been exporting to more than 50 countries since 1995.

For the past 26 years, Herr Foods has actively participated in Food Export–Northeast programs to expand sales in both new and existing international markets. Over the decades, the company has achieved many successes with Food Export. Two recent highlights include:

  • Mexico Market Growth: In May 2022, Herr Foods attended Food Export’s Sweets & Snacks Buyers Mission in Chicago, where the company reconnected with a buyer from Soriana Club Mexico, a partner they had not worked with in several years. The renewed relationship led to more than $55,000 in barrel snack sales in 2022 and $70,000 in barrel snacks and club packs in 2023. Herr Foods anticipates doubling sales with this buyer in 2024.

“We had lost touch with this buyer over the years,” said Don Lyle, International Sales Director at Herr Foods Inc. “Because of Food Export’s Buyers Mission, we were able to meet face-to-face, explore new opportunities in club-size packs, and re-establish our connection—resulting in new sales and, more importantly, a long-term relationship.”

  • First Sales to South Korea: In 2023, Herr Foods participated in Food Export’s Focused Trade Mission to South Korea for Healthy Ingredients, Retail, and Food Service. During a retail tour in Seoul and subsequent private meetings, the company connected with 18 Korean buyers. These efforts resulted in $23,000 in snack sales—marking Herr Foods’ first-ever shipment to South Korea—with expectations for future growth in the market.

In addition to in-person activities such as Buyers Missions and Trade Missions, Herr Foods also leverages Food Export’s educational resources, including webinars and Export Essentials, to strengthen its global business strategy.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
