The Vietnamese wood and wood products (W&WP) sector demonstrated strong resilience and remarkable recovery in 2024, achieving an export value of US$ 16.3 billion (or $16.27 billion), representing a significant increase of 20.8% compared to 2023. This performance successfully surpassed the industry’s $15.2 billion target set for the year.

The United States has consistently topped the list of hardwood suppliers to Vietnam for nearly a decade. In 2024, Vietnam imported $316.36 million worth from the US, marking a significant increase of 32.9% compared to 2023. The US accounted for 11.2% of Vietnam’s total wood and wood products (W&WP) import turnover.

  • The U.S. is Vietnam’s largest export market for wood and wood products, accounting for approximately 56% of Vietnam’s total export value.
  • Vietnam’s wood processing sector is heavily import-dependent for its raw materials, importing over $2.81 billion worth of wood and wood products in 2024. Raw materials (HS 44 group), such as logs and sawn wood, account for 85.2% of Vietnam’s total import value.
  • Vietnam’s wood processing sector is a global manufacturing powerhouse and a perpetually lucrative market for US hardwood and timber suppliers. Its explosive export growth in finished goods is fundamentally dependent on securing high-quality, legally sourced raw materials, a demand largely met by the United States.
