The Value of Exporting

For the small- and medium-sized business (SME), entering into the export market for value-added food products is an important decision. But why export? There are some important facts to consider:

  • More than 95% of the world’s population resides outside of the United States, which means there is high potential for additional sales abroad.
  • By producing at a higher capacity, fixed costs are lowered per unit, especially if little or no adaptation is required.
  • There is risk reduction since market diversification helps protect businesses in the event of a domestic slow-down.

In this seminar, we will review the benefits of exporting value-added food products overseas. Topics include:

  • Overseas Economic Growth
  • Small Companies Can Be Successful Exporters
  • International Markets More Accessible
  • Export Assistance Is Available
  • U.S. Competitive Advantage
  • Look at Specific Opportunities for Food
  • Forecast for the Future

We will also examine how companies who are either actively exporting or planning to export can introduce their products into a new market or revise a strategy in an existing one. Topics include:

  • Foreign Market Entry: Mode Selection Considerations
  • Variety of Export Distribution Channels
  • Direct Vs. Indirect Exporting
  • The Question of “Taking Title” (or Not)
  • Export Management and Trading Companies
  • Evaluating Export Intermediaries
  • What to Look for in an Importer/Distributor
  • Are You a Good Partner too?
