Singapore is at the cross-roads of major air and sea routes within the Asia Pacific region and serves as a hub and major transshipment center for much of the Southeast Asian region and the Indian subcontinent. Singapore's role in regional trade is demonstrated by the fact that re-exports comprise between 45%-50% of total exports. It is also serves as a regional food showcase and headquarters for international food and agricultural related companies. Singapore is almost entirely dependent on imports for all of its food requirements with virtually no local agricultural production.

In 2015, the U.S. exported US$674.3 million in total agricultural products to Singapore. Of that amount US$484.4 million were in consumer-oriented products, nearly 72% of the agricultural total, ranking it 3rd in Southeast Asia. Singapore also imported US$414 in U.S. processed food exports in 2015, 4th in the region.

Euromonitor has estimated the retail sales value of packaged foods in Singapore at nearly US$2.2 billion in 2015. This represents an increase of 15.6% or US$293.8 million since 2011. They have also forecast the packaged food retail sales to reach over US$2.3 billion by 2020, an increase of 6.2% or US$136.2 million.
