Market Opportunities and Key Issues in the Thai Food Market

Market Opportunities

  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages will become the predominant spending category in Thailand. Expenditure on hotels and catering is anticipated to increase at a fast pace
  • 27% of Thailand’s population are between the ages of 15 and 34, and eager to try new products to fit their Westernized lifestyles
  • Other growing purchasing power areas: Increasing the purchasing power of consumers in rural areas leads to more discretionary spending on non-traditional agricultural products
  • Restaurants are increasingly offering more niche and premium products to appeal to consumers with higher incomes

Key Issues

  • Imports of some U.S. food products are subject to trade barriers, including high import tariffs, rigid food import procedures, and burdensome documentation requirements
  • Thailand currently has 15 FTAs in place with 18 countries or territories
  • Local production is increasingly substituting imported food items. Locally produced snack foods, salad dressings, sauces, jams, and other processed foods are relatively inexpensive
  • Strong government protection of domestically produced products, such as poultry and pork, greatly complicate market access for imported products

FAS Post Bangkok reports Thailand’s hotel, restaurant, and intuitional (HRI) foodservice is expected to grow by 7% in 2024, with a market size of US$32.8 billion, supported by store expansion and a recovery in the tourism sector. However, there are factors that are expected to impact the business, such as the government’s policy of raising the minimum wage, which will result in higher costs since the foodservice business relies heavily on minimum wage labor. Additionally, the foodservice business faces increasingly intense competition from new entrants.

Food preparation and ready-to-eat meals continue to be key products for HRI establishments, accommodating both delivery services and small food outlets.

Thailand’s imports of agricultural and related products in 2023 were valued at US$22.5 billion, a 3.2% drop compared to the previous year. Thailand’s Ministry of Industry reported that food imports in 2023 were valued at US$19.1 billion, a growth of 3.5% from the following key products: 1) cereals used as ingredients in Thailand’s health food industry, 2) oilseed meal used as a feed ingredient, and 3) flour products as the instant noodle and bakery industries expanded.

Best Product Prospects:

FAS Post Bangkok reports that products present in the market that have good sales potential include healthy and functional food ingredients, including dried fruits, nuts, pulses, plant-based proteins (e.g., soybeans, nuts, and pulses), dairy proteins, nutrients, etc. There is also a growing demand for organic, gluten-free, plant-based, herbal extracts, and immune-boosting food ingredients.
