Turkey To Tokyo

Starting out in the Bronx, they now work with over 75 community gardens, ranging from cities like Detroit, Baltimore, and Los Angeles to name a few.

Joining Food Export – Northeast’s Branded Program in 2017, Small Axe Peppers has been able to increase their exporting efforts by not only utilizing Branded Program funds but the other resources made available by Food Export.

In February of 2020 Small Axe Peppers attended the Super Market Trade Show in Japan and had the following to say about the experience, “Food Export - Northeast was very helpful in assisting us develop a marketing plan for 2019 that for the first time allowed us to attend an international food show to market and export our products. We decided to focus on SMTS in Japan because each one of our hot sauces is branded with specific American cities names, ‘The Bronx Hot Sauce’, ‘The Detroit Hot Sauce’, ‘Los Angeles Hot Sauce’, etc. Because of this regional flair, we thought the hot sauce would do very well in Japan. And it did! The support received on site at the show by the team from Food Export - Northeast was invaluable. Not only did they have a knowledgeable onsite representative, they also set up a market retail tour, introduced us embassy contacts, and USDA FAS overseas representatives. We would not have been 1/10th successful if it wasn’t for them. We were able to make valuable contacts including with two of the biggest importers of American products into Japan. We are planning to start exporting our products to them in September, just six months after attending the trade show. I would recommend this trade show and Food Export - Northeast to any small batch local producers who are looking to increase exports but don’t quite know exactly where to begin.”

Small Axe Peppers has utilized Food Export programs since 2017, participating in the Branded Program, Food Show PLUS!™, and the Online Product Catalog.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
