Michael's Cookies Begins Baking Sales in Japan

by Food Export | Dec 13, 2017
Michael’s Bakery Products of Clear Lake, Iowa utilized Food Export’s programs and services to help them expand their international business into Japan. They achieved this by participating in Food Export’s Focused Trade Mission to Japan in October 2016 followed by exhibiting at the FoodEx Japan show in March 2017. To help offset the costs of travel and booth fees for these events, they utilized Food Export’s Branded Program for 50% reimbursement.

During Food Export’s Focused Trade Mission to Japan for Retail and Food Service, Don Smith, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, connected with several buyers who expressed interest in their cookies.  He remained in contact with these buyers and when Michael's Bakery Products exhibited at the FoodEx Japan Show several months later, he invited them to visit his booth.

The meetings at the booth during FoodEx Japan led to more interest and further sales discussions.  One buyer was very impressed with their shortbread cookies and after the show ordered 4 pallets worth approximately $12,000.  Furthermore, discussions with a different buyer led to an initial sale of $85,000 and a launch of the product throughout stores in Japan in September 2017.

Michael’s Bakery Products is a participant of Food Export’s Branded Program, which is a cost-share reimbursement program which provides companies with 50% reimbursement on their international marketing expenses.  They used it for reimbursement on travel expenses, booth fees, company banners, and handouts.

According to Don Smith, “our success in Japan is directly related to participation with Food Export – Midwest and the Branded Program.  We wouldn’t have traveled to Japan if not on the Food Export trade mission, we wouldn’t have gone to FoodEx Japan without first going on the trade mission, and we would not have carried out these activities without support from the Branded Program.”    leftimage_ourcookies

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
