Branded Program Continues to Help Increase Exports to Mexico for Michigan Cooperative

by Food Export | May 18, 2017
Cooperative Elevator Co. is an agricultural cooperative situated in Michigan's "thumb" - a rich agricultural region offering fertile soils, tiled fields, adequate rainfall, and temperatures moderated by Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay. Since 2005, Cooperative Elevator Co. has been using Food Export’s Branded Program to modify their packaging for the Mexico market. Each year, the packaging must be modified to prevent others from copying the packaging and producing counterfeits

As a result of the Branded Program, in 2016 Cooperative Elevator was able to increase their export sales to Mexico for Black Beans by $600,000.

According to Michael Wehner, VP of Finance, “Success using the Branded Program has allowed us to add additional employees, facilities and equipment”.

Cooperative Elevator Co. is a cooperatively owned marketer and processor of Black Beans based in Pigeon, Michigan.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these export increases, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
