Branded Program Helps Maine Lobster Company Develop New Exciting and Sustainable Relationship

Calendar Islands Maine Lobster LLC, located in Portland, Maine, started out in 2009 when Calendar Islands lobstermen decided to join their multigenerational knowledge of Maine lobstering and their love for local lobster recipes into an innovative business venture. Less than a decade later, Calendar Islands Maine Lobster serves as no less than a complete supply chain partnership between lobstering families, talented chefs and dockside lobster processing operations, managing the greatest Maine natural resource from catch to table. Since 2009 Calendar Islands has been marketing a line of value-added lobster products along with conventional whole lobster as well as tails and meat in both retail and foodservice.

The company has utilized several different programs available through Food Export Northeast since 2011. Participation in the Branded Program, Buyers Missions, Food Show PLUS!™ services and the Online Product Catalog allowed them to grow internationally and develop several promising and sustainable relationships with foreign partners, something that may not have been possible without the Market Access Program support.

With their allocated Branded Program funds Calendar Islands Maine Lobsterfocused on modifying country specific labeling as they export their gourmet lobster products to suppliers in China. The company also maintains its listing in the Online Product Catalog, which has yielded 7 to 10 leads per month.

Perhaps, one of the most exciting recent relationships for Calendar Islands resulted from participation in Food Export’s Seafood Trade Show at Seafood Expo Global in Brussels, Belgium in 2016. A new connection made with a qualified distributor from the United Kingdom triggered product sample orders, which later generated a sizable sales order of over $750,000. Since then the relationship has blossomed into a sustainable cooperation between Calendar Islands Maine Lobster and their distributor.  A visit to Maine this summer for several UK chefs is currently in the works.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability the US agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
