Branded Program Funding Helps Michigan Supplier Increase Exports to China & Hong Kong

by Food Export | Jan 18, 2017
North Bay Produce from Traverse City, Michigan utilized Food Export’s Branded Program funding in 2015 to penetrate East Asia. Knowing their blueberries and apples were a growing demand in the market, the Michigan supplier submitted a marketing plan with their Branded funding request which included plans to attend foreign trade shows and travel to the region.

Taking advantage of the 50% reimbursement through the Market Access Program funded Branded Program helped North Bay make over 30 new contacts while attending international trade shows. Sarah Yancho from North Bay Produce, Inc. told us, “About 70% of our export sales are with customers that we met directly or indirectly at Asia Fruit Logistica or Japan Supermarket Trade Show.” The cost of exhibiting at these shows was strongly deferred with funding from Food Export’s Branded Program.

Last year North Bay Produce realized actual sales over $400,000 in China and new actual sales over $200,000 in Hong Kong. Much of this success was due to their trade show attendance and the ability to do so because of their allocated Branded funding.

With this growing success, North Bay has grown and expanded which has resulted in new jobs with the company. Sarah Yancho stated, “Our growers continue to grow with the help of our developing export markets, which results in the ability to add new employees, expand their packing facilities, and increase their overall production.”

North Bay Produce has participated in the Food Export Branded Program since 2012 and has made strong gains establishing their fruit in East Asia using the Branded Program. A grower-owned fresh produce marketing and distribution company established in 1991 offers a dozen species of fresh produce and is committed to delivering consistently high quality produce to their customers across the world.
