PetCakes Goes Global

by Food Export | Jul 11, 2016
In March 2016, PetCakes by Lucky Paws, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the 1st Congressional District, attended the Global Pet Expo where Melinda Kirk, company CEO, utilized Branded Program funds to exhibit.

Prior to the show, she was in contact with a buyer from South Korea and it was at the show where she was able to demo her product and really capture the attention of the buyer.  However, it was not just the Korean buyer, but buyers from the UK, China, and Japan as well who were captivated by the product.  While in talks with the Korean buyer, she was able to tap into the information provided in a Food Export webinar on the Korean market that left a lasting impression on the buyer. “The webinar on Korea was very helpful and that information, I believe it is really what helped me build the relationship further,” said Melinda.

In the months following the Global Pet Expo, Melinda was able to very patiently work with the buyer and with the help of the Food Export Helpline™, she was able to make sure her documentation was correct and filled out properly. She offered her praises to the Food Export Helpline™ saying, “Dennis [Lynch, Food Export Helpline™ Counselor] was able to really help me with getting the correct documents and making sure they were up to par which really helped to solidify this deal.”  In turn, she was able to make a sale this month of two pallets of PetCakes a sale just under $10,000, with a promise of a second order being significantly more than that after the initial test run in the market. These buyers are also looking to take PetCakes into the Hong Kong market, thus expanding their global reach.

She will not stop there however.  Melinda is still in talks with the UK buyer and is hoping to make a sale soon that will be “significantly more” than the initial sale in the Korean market.  She is grateful to Food Export's Branded Program for being able to subsidize the cost of exhibiting at the Global Pet Expo and is excited to continue her growth in exporting.
