Business Boost for Nebraska Preferred Popcorn

by Food Export | Jul 11, 2016
Preferred Popcorn LLC, of Chapman, Nebraska, is a 100% farmer-owned company that grows and processes premium popcorn. In the company’s 16 years of existence, both bulk and microwave popcorn have been exported to over 55 countries on five continents.

One factor for this success is Food Export-Midwest’s assistance in helping Preferred Popcorn establish many of these international partnerships through export programs.

Preferred Popcorn has been a Food Export Branded Program participant for several years. The company has used the 50% reimbursement funding for a variety of activities including making label modifications for the UAE, shipping product samples to the Seoul Food & Hotels show in South Korea and expanding their export business by advertising and providing giveaways in Spain, just to name a few.

The company has also participated in Food Export’s Food Show PLUS!TM tradeshow enhancement service in Korea as well as several Buyers Missions which are designed to help U.S. suppliers meet new contacts abroad. With the Food Show PLUS!TM services the supplier was able to meet with buyers at the show, have materials translated, attend a marketing briefing to learn more about the Korean market from in-market consultants and have post-show assistance to organize new sales leads.

Preferred Popcorn has seen a significant business boost due to exports sales in these foreign markets. In March of 2010 the successful increase in business has propelled Preferred Popcorn to expand into a second facility in Palmyra, Indiana.

Growers from the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, Indiana, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky are producing product for Preferred Popcorn. The company is headquartered near Chapman in the fertile Platte River Valley of south central Nebraska. The business started back in the fall of 1997 when Founder and Chairman, Norm Krug, asked three entrepreneurial farmers to collaborate and purchase an inactive popcorn processing plant.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.
