How to Maintain Your International Export Business in a Non-Travel Environment

Mar 17, 2020

As questions swirl about the long-term impact of COVID-19 and international travel and large events are discouraged because of social distancing practices, the importance of finding alternatives for exploring new export markets is crucial. Food Export–Northeast has an array of services that help suppliers continue exporting in a non-travel, non-event environment. These online and phone-based services connect suppliers with In-Market Representatives allowing evaluation of existing markets or potential expansion into new ones to continue from their desk.

Tips for Exporting in a Non-Travel Environment

Ramp Up Online Presence:  From social media, to general website information, managing and consistently updating online content is a great way to promote your product overseas when you can't travel.  Through the Food Export Branded Program, a supplier's social media content and websites can be targeted to international markets.

Additionally, it’s important for suppliers to update their online profiles on Food Export–Northeast’s Database. If online product listings aren’t current, international buyers won’t be able to learn about what seafood products you offer and Food Export will not be able to match you with incoming trade leads, which could result in missed business opportunities. If you need help updating your online products and profile, contact us – we’re here to assist suppliers if you’re stuck.

Take Advantage of Wholesale Online Selling with Alibaba: Seafood suppliers can take advantage of our partnership with Alibaba, which allows members to set up virtual stores on the platform to help you reach a global audience of buyers instantly. To make it easy for Northeast U.S. seafood suppliers, Food Export–Northeast covers the cost of the supplier’s store set up fee through the Branded Program. By using this program, suppliers can also benefit from 50 percent off of Alibaba’s annual global store fee. More information can be found on this page. Don’t miss the short webinar on the program available on the bottom of that page.

Call the Food Export Helpline™ for On Demand Service: No matter what level of exporting experience you have, the Food Export Helpline™ provides callers with knowledge and expertise from our export professional who has 34 years of experience. Their customized advice covers everything from export readiness for the beginner, to compliance procedures for the more experienced exporters. Whether it’s a one-off question, or a request for long-term support, callers can feel comfortable calling to ask a breadth of questions like below:

  • Does my product have any potential in other countries?

  • What are the best markets for my product?

  • How do I calculate export prices based on terms of sale?

  • What are the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) compliance procedures?

Utilize the Virtual Consultations Service to Learn More about a New Market: When developing foreign market export and expansion plans, it’s common to have questions that are hard to answer without market knowledge. Our Virtual Consultations service allows suppliers to connect directly with our In-Market Representatives in 30-minute one-on-one sessions. Suppliers submit their questions in advance to ensure that every minute of the session is customized and useful for customers.
