U.S. Food Producers use Food Export's Focused Trade Mission to Explore Opportunities in Brazil
In May 2016, eight Midwest and Northeast food products producers participated in the Focused Trade Mission to Brazil for Retail & Food Service Products. During the Trade Mission, the companies received a market briefing at the U.S. Embassy, attended a tour of local food retail stores, and met one-on-one with food products buyers and importers at the international APAS Show that took place in Sao Paulo May 3 - 5. The U.S. participants represented a wide range of products including healthy snacks, bakery products, sauces, non-dairy (nut) beverages, cheese products, and ice cream and ice cream mixes.

One participant was Kontos Foods Inc., located in Paterson, New Jersey.  For more than 60 years, Kontos Foods has been producing authentic flatbread, fillo and other products using traditional techniques to ensure the highest quality. The company’s Marketing Director, and the Export Sales Director spent three days meeting with importers and other potential customers. In terms of the on-site experience, the Marketing Director commented that the “high level of market intelligence, commitment and passion” supplied by the Food Export In-Market Representative team helped to maximize effectiveness during their brief time in the market. He further commented that “It was a pleasure working with such a high level of sales and marketing professionals who truly understood the intricacies of the Brazilian marketplace.” The company is engaged in follow-up with contacts made during the trade mission in order to move discussions to the next level.

Herr Foods of Nottingham, Pennsylvania, in the 16th Congressional District, also traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil with Food Export. At the event, the International Sales Manager for Herr Foods met with various foreign buyers and organizations. In July Herr’s shipped an order for approximately $15,000 worth of snack food products as a result of the mission. She commented, “I am truly pleased for the work you guys did to make the Trade Mission trip to Brazil a very successful event.  I have to say your team went above and beyond looking after each one of us participants.”

Kinesis for Markets Merging in America (KIMMA), from Saint Paul, Minnesota, was another participant with the Focused Trade Mission to Brazil.  In Brazil, they participated in a retail tour of the market, took advantage of the pre-event market research and assistance from Food Export’s In-Market Representative, and one-on-one meetings with buyers to get a better understanding of the market. As a result of these services, KIMMA reported an astonishing $80,000 in projected sales. Their success did not stop there however. There were also five new agent relationships made and 25 new foreign contacts.  "It has been a true pleasure to participate in this Trade Mission to Brazil, which is the most effective one I've ever had the opportunity to participate in. If we could clone this team and send them to every targeted market, we would be able to triple our exports within a year!". The CEO and Trade & Development Specialist with KIMMA had this to say about the trade mission, “The Trade Mission to Brazil was a tremendous success! I found the best suitable distributor for my products, and the conversations are moving forward to bring their products to this market. I was blown away by the quality of the services that the In-Market Representative’s office provided for us. That, along with the quality of the meetings arranged, surpassed my expectations for overseas trade offices' performance.”

The overall outcome for the participants was extremely positive, with companies reporting aggregated on-site sales of more than $3 million.  From these initial orders, the first shipment sailed for Brazil within a few weeks of the mission. In addition to actual and projected sales, the mission participants reported the number of high-prospect buyer contacts in excess of 75 and more than 25 distribution partner contacts.
