U.S. exports of U.S. agricultural products to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC-6) members (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia) increased 1% to nearly US$3 billion in 2016. U.S. exports of consumer food products totaled nearly US$1.7 billion, which was 56% of the agricultural total. This partner group is a solid importer of U.S. processed foods, totaling US$1.2 billion.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) with its larger population, larger influx of tourists and business-people coupled with its vibrant re-export activities is the second largest market for food products. Within the U.A.E., Dubai is the country’s commercial center and the region’s trade hub. Efficient infrastructure (sea, land and air ports), large free trade zones and a strong business orientation make Dubai an important commercial center in the Middle East. Dubai derives sizable revenue from the re-export business and invests heavily in infrastructure, while luring foreign investment and buyers.

The advantages for U.S. exporters of consumer ready food products to the region are numerous. They include a high quality image of U.S. products, high regional per capita incomes, and a broad familiarity with U.S. culture. There are also consistently low tariffs and relatively transparent import procedures.

FoodSource, Inc. Exports to Dubai
In 2014, FoodSource, Inc., from Willowbrook, Illinois, attended the Focused Trade Mission to Dubai for Retail and Food Service Products. After making contact with multiple international buyers, FoodSource, Inc. successfully exported almonds and walnuts to Dubai throughout the months of November, December, and January. Sales amounted to $1.5 million dollars. Shereen Hussain of FoodSource, Inc. said, “Food Export Midwest programs provided valuable assistance and resources for growing our business.”

Focused Trade Missions, like the one FoodSource Inc. participated in, brings a group of U.S. suppliers to an international market to learn about the country’s food trends and meet face-to-face with local buyers. These events create great valuable opportunities for U.S. suppliers to be introduced to a new market for export potential.

FoodSource, Inc. is a global supplier of nuts and dried fruit. They represent North American growers to importers, distributors, food manufacturers and national retailers. FoodSource, Inc. has participated in many Food Export events including Food Show PLUS!™ and various Focused Trade Missions.
