Connect and Drive Sales
Dominican Republic is now the fifth largest market for U.S. consumer oriented products in the Western Hemisphere, after Canada, Mexico, Colombia and Chile, with exports declining slightly to US$450.7 million in 2015. There are still many opportunities for growth in sales to the Dominican market. U.S. exports of processed foods to the Dominican Republic in 2015 totaled US$394.9.

Dominicans have adopted much of the U.S. culture, such as music, sports, and fashion. The food consumption trend in the Dominican is similar to the trend in the U.S., although one can estimate a lag of some time. It is clear that what is demanded in the U.S. will be demanded in the Dominican Republic in the future. Dominican consumers have the idea that products made in more developed countries, such as the U.S., are more reliable in terms of quality and safety. There is also a tendency, mainly among middle and high-income classes, to consume natural and healthy products. These consumers are demanding food with less saturated fat, cholesterol, and sugar.

Retail sales value in the packaged food market in the Dominican Republic was nearly US$2.7 billion in 2015. That represents a 30.2% period growth rate from 2011, or US$621.1 million. The forecast growth rate is estimated at over US$2.9 billion by 2020, and 10.2% growth or US$273 million.

Chance Meeting for Life Plus in the Dominican Republic
In January 2016, Life Plus Style Gourmet, LLC, a New York company that is promoting Coney Island Popcorn, secured a small order with a major retailer in the Dominican Republic, shipping a pallet of four different popcorn flavors.

Robi Nedboy, Creative Director for the company mentioned that it was a meeting by chance on the 2015 Focused Trade Mission to the Dominican Republic this past October that occurred. “The buyer did not have a scheduled meeting with us, but towards the end of the mission, after the buyer was attracted by our packaging, we were approached to have a meeting, and three months later we now have shipped our first order to them,” Nedboy said.

Life Plus Style Gourmet, LLC is a small grocery wholesaler from Valley Stream, New York that was formed in 2013. The company designs, manufacturers, and packages gourmet food products including coffee, gourmet syrups, cocktail mixers, Himalayan salt, assorted spices and sugars, and recently launched Coney Island Popcorn. Life Plus Style Gourmet LLC has participated in Food Export’s Branded Program, Food Export Helpline™, Webinars, numerous Buyers Missions and Focused Trade Missions, and is increasing participation greatly in 2016.
