Mexico remains one of the largest and most consistent markets for U.S. agricultural products.  With the geographical advantage of a long land border and a Free Trade Agreement that has eliminated duties on all agricultural and food products, Mexico is a natural market for U.S. exporters.

In 2018 Mexico passed China to once again become the 2nd largest market for U.S. agricultural products from the U.S. In 2018, U.S. exports of consumer-ready food products added up to nearly US$8.6 billion, an increase of 3% from the same period in 2017. Mexico remains the 2nd largest export market for consumer ready products.

Mexico also imports a considerable amount of U.S. processed foods as well. In 2018 it added up to US$5.9 billion, ranking 2nd in the world and an increase of 2%.

The U.S. has a number of distinct advantages when it comes to exporting food products to Mexico. The U.S. and Mexico are highly integrated economies and Mexicans are familiar with U.S. business practices. The proximity of Mexico to the U.S. cross-cultural awareness and strong bilateral relationships throughout the public and private sectors facilitates trade. Import procedures are becoming more standardized. The extensive presence of U.S. Cooperators and industry representatives facilitates trade opportunities to be detected.

Additionally, Mexican consumers recognize U.S. brands and labels and associate them with high, consistent quality and value. Most international tourists visiting Mexico are North Americans and, to a large degree, like to consume products they are used to buying at home. Major retailers are developing increasingly sophisticated distribution systems, which will provide more space and better cold chain technology for high value imports. Greater knowledge about organic products is opening new product opportunities at the retail level; likewise, increased awareness of obesity issues is creating greater demand for healthy products.

Spreading BBQ Love to Mexico
In January, ROWDYDOW bbQ WorldWide, located in Chicago, Illinois in the 7th Congressional District, attended the Focused Trade Mission to Mexico for Private Label and Retail Products where they connected with a buyer from Costco. In January, they confirmed a deal with Costco Mexico to launch a pulled pork sandwich program for all 36 country locations, forecasted for annual sales of $750,000 with a plan to grow a long term relationship and product offerings well into the future.  It will be their first export sale into Mexico!

According to Angela Keaveny, Founder of ROWDYDOW bbQ, “Starting this partnership [with Costco] is enabling us to realize what we’ve set out to do—spread the love of BBQ as an American classic, with the rest of the world.” ROWDYDOW is specifically excited to be sharing the BBQ inspired by Angela’s Father’s original recipe with the folks in Mexico. Their goal is to extend their influence through Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia as well.

Angela thanks Food Export for the educational and market entry programs she has taken advantage of, “Without working with the Food Export Association since 2013, I wouldn’t know half of what I know about how to conduct business in international markets. The Trade Missions are the smartest, quickest and most strategic way to conduct business by way of how I was matched with buyers who are interested in my products and with whom I have mutual interest, truly invaluable for accelerating the sales cycle. I was able to learn about and understand the market and more confidently meet with the buyers, especially considering a whole other country, culture and language.  The Food Export team provided guidance and comfort throughout the process.”

ROWDYDOW bbQ is passionate about producing inspiring bbQ products and experiences. Pre-smoked ROWDYDOW bbQ first starts with fresh meat cuts and ingredients you can pronounce. Artisan-crafted in small batches, their meats all come rubbed and perfectly smoked. They offer unsauced pulled pork and brisket as well as their special pulled pork kissed with just the right amount of their SOUTH-SATIONAL barbeque sauce featuring a hot, sweet twist. Their products are available for retail and food service markets.
