Brazil is the largest economy in Latin America with its GDP (Gross Domestic Product) continuing to report positive rates in 2022. Brazil is also one of the largest destinations for U.S. exports. Agricultural products exported to Brazil reached over $910 million between January and November 2022, which represents a 40% increase from 2021. The U.S. also reported growth in exports of processed foods in 2022 during the same period.
The supermarket sector serves as the main supply channel in Brazil. By 2021 there were more than 92,000 stores throughout the country with a revenue of $115 billion, representing an increase of 7% in the national GDP. The food service sector was among the most affected by the pandemic. Despite this, the sector has been recovering exponentially since the implementation of vaccination programs. Sales increased by 70% in 2022 compared to the previous year and reached pre-pandemic levels.
Despite currency and other economic fluctuations, influenced by the presidential elections in 2022, the Brazilian economy currently appears stable and the inflation rate in 2022 was reported 5.8% lower than in the U.S.
