Explore the Opportunities for Exporting with E-Commerce Platforms

Jun 03, 2020

During these unprecedented times when trade shows and other industry events have been postponed or cancelled, many companies are searching for ways to continue to promote their products and keep their presence in the market. This may be an opportunity to branch out into the fast-growing world of e-commerce.

Most consumers are familiar with B2C (business to consumer) e-commerce sites, but there are also many B2B (business to business) platforms that can help you grow your business or even give you an opportunity to venture into new markets. When face to face business is not an option, developing a strong e-commerce web store can help create new relationships with wholesalers, retailers, importers, and distributors.

Most B2B e-commerce platforms have a variety of packages that may include initial site design and set up, marketing tools, customer support, and more. Annual platform management fees may even be an eligible expense through the Branded Program. Some sites also sell advertising credits that can be used to target specific markets. These credits can also be reimbursed through the Branded program.

There are many B2B e-commerce platforms to choose from, including Alibaba, Magento, OpenCart, Shopify Plus to name a few. There are also platforms that target specific markets, such as But2Sell in Vietnam.

Food Export - Midwest and Food Export - Northeast have partnered with Alibaba.com and are currently offering an Onboarding Assistance Package.

Does your distributor have an e-commerce site or web store they want you to use? If so, these costs may also be eligible for reimbursement through the Branded Program.

Please keep in mind that all web stores and advertisements must include an eligible USA origin statement in order to be eligible for reimbursement.

If you have any questions about Branded eligibility for e-commerce costs or would like to see examples of e-commerce stores, please get in touch with your Branded Program contact or email MW_claims@foodexport.org or NE_Claims@foodexport.org
