2018 World Pork Expo
Des Moines, IA
June 6, 2018 – June 7, 2018

On June 4th buyers from Colombia, Korea, Mexico, China, Jamaica, and Vietnam met with eight different suppliers from the feed industry in Kansas City, Missouri for our Value-Added Feed Ingredients Buyers Mission.  The Missouri Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Department of Agriculture coordinated the activity and hosted a lunch.  From Kansas City, the buyers and staff drove to Des Moines, Iowa stopping on the way at the MFA Rail Facility and a Smithfield Foods feed mill for tours.

In Des Moines, the buyers met with 13 U.S. suppliers and attended the 2018 World Pork Expo – all facilitated by the Activity Coordinator, Mark Fischer, of the Iowa Economic Development Authority.  Like all international groups at the expo, the Food Export buyers were invited to a dinner on a local farm, sponsored by various agricultural associations and attended by Mike Naig, the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture.  The 100+ meetings throughout the week resulted in tens of millions of dollars in export sales, with projections of much more in the future!

2018 Caribbean and Latin American Buyers Mission w/ Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA)

Miami, FL
June 13, 2018 – June 14, 2018

The 2018 Caribbean and Latin American Buyers Mission took place at the Embassy Suites Miami International Airport Hotel June 12-14, 2018. Despite the overcast Miami skies, everything was looking bright at the event where Food Export – Midwest, Food Export – Northeast, and the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) hosted buyers from a number of countries in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean basin.

Things kicked off with a presentation on the Peruvian market. Peru and the United States share a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) which helps U.S. products remain price competitive in the Peruvian market. The Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS) marketing specialists highlighted the need to target the Lima metropolitan area as Lima is generally seen as the largest and only market in the country for imported consumer oriented products.

Summer Fancy Food Show
New York City, New York
June 30, 2018 – July 2, 2018

The Specialty Food Association’s Summer Fancy Food Show took place at the Javits Center in New York City from June 30th to July 2nd.  Prior to the show Food Export – Midwest and Food Export – Northeast held a 3 days Buyers Mission where a group of 20+ buyers met with over 60+ U.S. Suppliers.  Our In Market Representative from Germany Jens Hombeck was in town for the Buyers Mission and the Summer Fancy show and was able to meet one on one with a number of Suppliers giving them unique insight into the current state of the European market.

The Summer Fancy Food Show is the largest specialty food industry event in North America.  As always, the show saw a large amount of traffic over the 3 day period and connections from all over the world were made.

Bonita Oehlke from the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture and Erin Windham from the Connecticut Department of Agriculture were both present for the Buyers Mission and the show.   Also in attendance at the show were Tom Mainzer from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Lauren Masseria from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets.  Our Liaisons in attendance were able to connect in person with some of our Member States representatives, get a first-hand account of the current state of exporting for their respective states, and even walk the show floor with them.  The more informed and connected our staff is, the better we can help serve our Suppliers!
